Say Cheese!

Gabe has really been workin' his fake smile these days. Consequently it makes it almost impossible to get a good picture of him, in fact he looks like he's in pain sometimes. If I ask him to 'smile,' 'say cheese' or just 'look at the camera' this is what I get...

Now here is the real deal...

Any suggestions on how to get a real smile out of him?

I love them! (The first one is priceless) I actually love the one in his booster seat, even if it is a fake smile. As for getting real smiles, when I'm photographing kids that *don't* want to smile... or won't... I have them say "kimchi!" or "spaghetti!" or anything else that has the "eee" ending. I also find that asking them about a favorite thing, or sport, or toy brings out the smiles. So, for Spencer, "digger" brings out a smile as well... even though it doesn't have the "eee" ending.

I think each kid must go through this phase--at least kids like ours who get photographed a lot. Lately, Matthew doesn't even look up from what he's doing. He just says "cheese" very monotone-like and to him that is passable. I have no tips!

Lookin good in Badger Rd, Gabe!

I have no suggestions for getting ride of the fake smile. About 95% of all the pictures we take of Seth are with his silly smile that looks like he is serious pain.

Luckily, Gabe's smile is adorable!

first of all, i LOVE the second and third photos, fake smile or not ;)
second, my friend's son is *still* doing this weird fake smile thing and he's in second grade. she makes him think about farts and poop and it gets a genuine smile every.single.time. ;)

I wish I had suggestions, but have you ever seen a family photo of the Schencks? That's right, you haven't. Why? Because none of us can take a good picture to save our lives! Lily is queen of the fake smile and at age 5 3/4, the only way I can coax a genuine laugh and smile out of her is by saying "poop". Hilair. Not. BTW: I happen to think Gabe's smiles are funny and he's gonna show you that he doesn't have to smile on command!

Ha ha, I love all those faces! Especially the ones where he looks kind of annoyed with a scrunched up nose, like "geez, Mom, you're so annoying." I have no advice but I like what Grace and Beth had to say - just talk about poop, I guess!

Ha!! I love all of these smiles, fake or not, they are great! If you find out how to get a real smile on command, please let me know. I have this problem too!

I love Gabe's fake smiles! Even though they aren't real, they are still adorable. Joel does this sometimes, too. I usually find that tickling right before a picture or playing peek-a-boo with the camera works--when he's in the right mood.

I'm actually a huge fan of fake smiles - Ingrid is really into it now too. I just know that one day I'll look back on the photos from this stage and smile. For real :) (Ok, that was totally hokey, but it's true! I think it's a super fun stage for the kids to be at!)

I love the smiles...fake and rea1! The nose scrunching thing is adorable! I have no advice besides...wait it out...my older two went through that too and the more I tried to "correct" it, the worse it got...eventually they grew out of it!

Ha ha! Love the 3rd one down. When you think about it, learning facial expressions is a very nuanced art. So cute!

no advice on getting a real smile since it's like pulling teeth for me to get a good one out of briar!

We are going through a non-smile phase over here. Colin has been in it since the holidays. I love the fake smiles tho.

Little D has started this too...we get plenty of I'm-in-pain looks or else it looks like he is snarling. More often though either I cannot get him to look at me for a photo or he gets up, runs to me, and demands to look at himself on my camera (sometimes I loathe the screen on the back...since D always wants to SEE!).

Gabe's smiles (fake or not) made me smile...for real.

Oh Gabe- fake or not- your smile is great!
I'm going to try Christine's suggestions - Alex never smiles for me...
You should see our wedding party pics... The flier girl and ring bearers had the fakest smiles around!
